In a significant move towards enhancing the trust and discoverability of AI agents, Infoblox and GoDaddy have embarked on a collaboration to establish open standards that utilize existing Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure. This initiative aims to improve the identification, discovery, and verification of AI agents across the internet, addressing a pressing need as these agents start to integrate into various digital environments.

Infoblox is leading the DNS for AI Discovery (DNS-AID), which promotes an open, interoperable framework for agent discovery. Alongside this, GoDaddy is developing the Agent Name Service (ANS), which focuses on agent naming and verification. Together, these initiatives aim to create a cohesive system that avoids the pitfalls of concentrated vendor control, allowing for independent implementations within community standards bodies.

The urgency for such standards is highlighted by the growing presence of AI agents in everyday digital interactions. As these agents function across websites and applications, the ability to verify their identities becomes essential. Jared Sine, chief strategy and legal officer at GoDaddy, noted the importance of this development: “Agents will only reach their full potential on the open web if people and systems can verify who they are interacting with.” By leveraging the Domain Name Service, which operates at the global scale and speed required for such applications, the proposed standards aim to establish a reliable infrastructure for agent interactions.

Wei Chen, chief legal officer and executive vice president at Infoblox, reflected on lessons learned from earlier communication infrastructures. He pointed out that the shift from a centralized phonebook model to an open, federated protocol through DNS has been crucial for building digital trust. “Forty years later, DNS remains the gold standard for digital trust and a scalable foundation where agents, Model Context Protocols, services, and endpoints can be discovered and trusted,” Chen stated.

Both companies are committed to ensuring that no single entity dominates the naming, discovery, or verification processes of AI agents.
