OpenAI has unveiled a suite of personal finance tools designed for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States, enabling users to connect their bank accounts and seek advice on spending habits and financial planning. This launch marks a significant entry into the financial services sector, with OpenAI collaborating with Plaid, a financial connection platform, to integrate with over 12,000 financial institutions, including major players like Schwab, Fidelity, and Chase.
This rollout follows OpenAI's recent acquisition of the team from personal finance startup Hiro, which has received backing from notable investment firms. While OpenAI has not disclosed how much the Hiro team contributed to the new tools, their financial expertise was deemed crucial in the development process. This move aligns with a growing trend among AI companies to create specialized products for sensitive areas, especially finance and health.
Users can access the new feature by selecting the “Finances” option in the ChatGPT sidebar or by issuing a specific command to connect their accounts. Once linked, the chatbot provides an overview of portfolio performance, spending trends, and upcoming financial obligations. The integration allows users to ask detailed questions like, “I feel like I’ve been spending more recently. Has anything changed?” or “Help me build a plan to be ready to buy a house in my area in the next 5 years.”

The introduction of these tools comes as OpenAI reports that over 200 million users inquire about financial matters each month through ChatGPT. With the enhanced capabilities of the newly released GPT-5.5 model, designed for better contextual reasoning, OpenAI aims to address a wider range of personal finance questions more effectively. The company has worked with financial professionals to set benchmarks for improving the model’s performance in this important area.
Users can also manage their account connections with ease. They can disconnect services via the settings menu, with any synced data set to be deleted after 30 days. Users can view and erase their financial memories directly from the Finances page, enhancing privacy and control over their personal information.
OpenAI's entry into personal finance tools signifies a noteworthy shift in the AI industry, as both OpenAI and its competitor Anthropic are developing specialized solutions for various sectors. This trend is echoed in recent launches by other companies, such as Perplexity, which introduced its own financial research product earlier this month.
Initially, the personal finance tools will be available to ChatGPT Pro users on both web and iOS platforms, with plans to gather user feedback for further refinement before extending access to Plus users. As the financial landscape increasingly intertwines with AI capabilities, OpenAI's latest offering highlights its commitment to innovative solutions in the AI-driven economy.
