Fireblocks has unveiled its Agentic Payments Suite, a solution designed to support the full lifecycle of AI agent transactions. This launch is part of a broader strategy to boost stablecoin adoption through AI agents. Alongside this rollout, Fireblocks has joined the x402 Foundation, which aims to establish Coinbase’s x402 protocol as the primary payment infrastructure for AI agents.

The Agentic Payments Suite includes wallet infrastructure that allows AI agents to send funds and an acceptance layer for merchants to receive payments. It also features compliance and settlement tools tailored for regulated financial institutions.

Idan Ofrat, co-founder and chief product officer of Fireblocks, underscored the importance of this initiative, pointing out that over a billion people use AI assistants every day. He highlighted the potential impact of AI agents on the payments landscape, suggesting that if even a small fraction of users start delegating spending authority to these agents, the speed of stablecoin transactions could increase significantly.

Key figures in the crypto sector, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, predict a future where AI agents become the primary users of blockchain transactions. Recent integrations reflect this trend. For example, in early May, Amazon Web Services announced its integration of Coinbase’s x402 payments protocol into Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, enabling AI agents to transact in USDC (USD Coin) and access AWS-managed payment services. Additionally, Oobit recently launched a Visa-supported virtual card that allows AI agents to make purchases in USDt (Tether) on behalf of businesses.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding AI agents, transaction activity remains relatively low. Data from x402.org shows that only $24.2 million in trading volume has been processed through the x402 protocol over the past month. Ofrat acknowledged that the sector is still in its infancy, stating, "We're in the infrastructure-building phase." He compared current developments to the decades it took for card infrastructure to establish stable controls and trust layers.

The Road Ahead for AI Agents

As AI agents evolve, their capability to transact in fiat currencies is also growing. Google is currently developing infrastructure to enable AI agents to make online purchases in US dollars. However, Ofrat argues that stablecoins are the most suitable medium for AI agent transactions, stating that traditional card networks and bank transfers cannot accommodate the instantaneous, programmable, machine-to-machine value transfers required by AI agents. He asserts, "Digital assets aren't just a good fit for agentic payments. They're the only fit."

Fireblocks' participation in the x402 Foundation, which includes tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services, as well as payment companies such as Mastercard and Visa, signifies a strong endorsement of the x402 protocol as a foundational element for future AI agent transactions. The foundation also includes crypto-native organizations like Circle, Polygon Labs, and the Solana Foundation, highlighting a collaborative effort to advance this technology.

As the market for AI agents and digital assets continues to grow, Fireblocks and its partners are well-positioned to influence the future of payments in the increasingly interconnected realms of AI and blockchain.
