New Credential Management Solutions

1Password's latest offering introduces a Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, which allows developers to grant access to sensitive credentials directly within their coding workflows. This method ensures that secrets remain concealed from prompts, code, and model context. By injecting credentials at runtime, the system guarantees that sensitive information is not stored on disk and is only accessible during the execution of a session.

Nancy Wang, CTO of 1Password, emphasized the urgency of adapting security models for AI agents: “As coding agents take on more of the software development lifecycle, the question isn’t whether to give them access, but how. A credential that persists is already compromised. That’s why just-in-time credentials are the only viable security model for AI-native development.”

This integration not only improves security but also streamlines the development process, allowing teams to deploy applications more efficiently while safeguarding sensitive information.

Practical Application in Development

1Password demonstrated the application of this new security model through a practical example, showcasing how Codex, OpenAI's coding AI, builds a Next.js application for a bookstore with Stripe checkout. During this process, sensitive credentials, such as the Stripe secret key, are obfuscated within the code. The integration with 1Password’s MCP server ensures that these credentials are managed locally and securely, preventing exposure in plain text.

Nick Steele, from OpenAI's Agent Security team, stated that the collaboration aims to simplify agentic development, which “empowers teams to ship faster while keeping sensitive credentials protected.”
