Anthropic’s Claude Mythos AI Raises Alarms Over DeFi Vulnerabilities

The recent public release of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos AI model, Fable 5, has sent shockwaves through the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector. Crypto users are wary that this advanced AI tool could become a significant asset for exploiting vulnerabilities within DeFi protocols. The model has previously identified over 10,000 high-severity software flaws. Despite the implementation of safeguards to limit its misuse, concerns within the crypto community remain high.

A Troubling Track Record

Fable 5’s capabilities stem from its role in the Project Glasswing initiative, where it uncovered critical vulnerabilities across more than 1,000 open-source projects, including serious exploits in widely used software like the Linux kernel and FFmpeg. Its speed is equally alarming; it can generate proof-of-concept exploits for complex issues in under 31 minutes. This blend of speed and effectiveness raises serious alarms about its potential to disrupt the high-stakes crypto market.

DeFi Under Threat

Simon Dedic, co-founder of Moonrock Capital, has expressed serious concerns about the implications of Fable 5 for DeFi. He warned that the model could significantly lower the barriers to exploiting weaknesses in smart contracts, stating, "Unaudited protocols will become sitting ducks." Historical data supports this view, revealing that in April 2026, crypto hacks led to losses of $629.7 million, the highest since early 2025. Analysts have linked this spike in losses to the growing sophistication of AI technology in identifying vulnerabilities. Dedic, alongside other crypto experts, is urging users to adopt defensive measures, such as revoking wallet approvals and moving funds to hardware wallets, to reduce potential risks.

Safeguards or Illusions?

In light of these concerns, Anthropic has claimed that Fable 5 includes several safeguards, such as rerouting cybersecurity queries to a less advanced AI model, Claude Opus 4.8. Full access to Mythos capabilities is restricted to vetted cybersecurity organizations. However, critics remain doubtful, arguing that even with these precautions, malicious actors might still find ways to exploit the technology.

Michael Egorov, co-founder of Curve Finance, offered a more nuanced perspective. He suggested that the impact of Mythos on DeFi code may be limited due to the relatively concise nature of smart contracts, which makes them easier to analyze by both AI and human experts. Still, he warned about potential threats to operational security, including compromises of multisig keys and supply chain attacks on frontend dependencies.
