The rise of agentic AI is on track to reshape productivity, with projections indicating the market could expand from $8 billion in 2025 to an astonishing $199 billion by 2034. This shift is especially noticeable among knowledge workers who are increasingly using AI agents to improve their productivity and learning processes.
The Shift to Delegated Tasks
Booking a work trip used to require meticulous planning—comparing prices and flight times across multiple tabs. Now, knowledge workers can simply instruct an AI agent with their preferences, allowing the system to handle the complexities of travel planning. Jeremy Yang, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, highlights this evolution: “It takes objectives and preferences, instead of step-by-step instructions.” This change reflects a key difference; individuals are starting to treat AI as personal assistants capable of managing lower-level details with minimal input.
Yang's research, conducted with the team at Perplexity, draws from extensive user interaction data to show how AI agents are being utilized. Their findings reveal that the heaviest adopters of these technologies are mainly in higher-GDP countries and possess higher education levels. The largest segment of users comes from the digital technology sector, making up 28% of total adopters, followed by academics and financial professionals.
Key Applications of Agentic AI
The research identified clear trends in how these AI agents are being used. Productivity tasks dominated, accounting for 36% of queries, including document editing and email management. Learning-related tasks followed, representing 21% of interactions, with users engaging in activities such as summarizing course content. Other significant categories included media and entertainment (16%), shopping and commerce (10%), travel planning (7%), and job-related tasks (7%). According to Yang, the work performed is often cognitively demanding, comparing the AI's role to that of a research assistant rather than a conventional executive assistant. He states, “It’s like having a second brain and pair of hands.”
Implications for Future Work Environments
As agentic AI continues to evolve, businesses need to consider how they can enhance these tools and adapt their digital interfaces. Yang suggests that if AI agents become primary users, website designs may need to change to accommodate their unique interaction patterns. He emphasizes the importance of preparing for a future where AI is an integral part of the workforce.
Despite the promising outlook, Yang warns of potential disparities in adoption rates that could exacerbate existing inequalities. Human oversight will remain essential, particularly for tasks that carry significant consequences. As AI agents increasingly function as digital coworkers, there will be a pressing need for policymakers to establish regulations that ensure equitable access and for educators to equip students with the skills necessary for an AI-centric job market.
The work environment is changing. While it may seem futuristic, the trends indicate a clear direction. Yang asserts, “We need to learn how to develop new skills and processes in order to be prepared.” The integration of agentic AI into daily workflows marks a pivotal moment in how tasks are approached across various sectors, signaling a new era of productivity enhancement through technology.
