The anxiety surrounding artificial intelligence's impact on employment is disproportionately affecting front-line workers, a new study indicates. While knowledge workers, such as analysts and coders, are directly in the path of AI's capabilities, the approximately 60 million hourly workers are losing sleep over their job security.

Research conducted by PYMNTS Intelligence, in collaboration with Ingo Payments and WorkWhile, shows that only 40% of these workers feel confident in finding comparable employment if they were to lose their jobs. This lack of confidence highlights a significant issue in how employers communicate about the introduction of AI technologies.

Communication Breakdown

Drew Edwards, CEO of Ingo Payments, and Simon Khalaf, CEO of WorkWhile, discussed these findings on the latest Wage to Wallet podcast with PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster. They emphasized that the fear surrounding job loss is less about the technology itself and more about how employers fail to convey its implications to their workforce.

According to the research, a striking 37% of front-line workers reported that their employers have already integrated AI or automation into their operations. Yet, nearly 60% of these employees received no training on how to use the new systems or adapt to the changes. Edwards pointed out that this gap in communication fosters uncertainty, stating, "If you’re a worker and what you’re hearing… is that nobody’s going to have a job in five years, that is scary stuff."

The Training Gap

Employers are deploying AI technologies without adequately preparing their workforce, which is a management failure rather than a technological one. Only 12% of businesses surveyed felt well-equipped to handle the changes brought about by AI. Most chief financial officers identified skill gaps as the primary barrier to adopting these new systems, along with the organizational complexity and resistance to change that often accompany such transitions.

The implications of this communication gap are profound. Workers are exposed to a constant stream of commentary about automation leading to job losses. Without clear guidance from their employers, they are left to speculate about worst-case scenarios. Khalaf noted that the narrative surrounding automation is often negative, which can distort perceptions of job security in their roles.

Looking Ahead

Despite these fears, Edwards and Khalaf also highlighted a paradox: the demand for human labor is accelerating in many sectors. They pointed out that while certain jobs will inevitably change, the integration of AI could create new opportunities for collaboration between humans and machines. Edwards remarked, "My experience… is it’s giving me an entirely new team to work with side by side with these people."

As businesses navigate the evolving role of AI, addressing training and communication gaps will be crucial. By equipping front-line workers with the necessary skills and knowledge, employers can alleviate fears of displacement and foster a more positive outlook on the future of work in an AI-driven economy. The focus should shift from fear to opportunity, emphasizing how technology can complement human roles rather than replace them entirely.
