In a striking assertion, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has predicted that the transactional volume generated by autonomous AI agents will eventually eclipse that of the human economy. This forecast reflects a pressing reality, as major corporations like Amazon, Google, and Circle race to implement payment infrastructures tailored for AI entities that operate without traditional banking methods such as passports or credit cards.
Central to this development is Coinbase itself, particularly through its blockchain network, Base. Armstrong's statement underscores that the emerging agentic economy is not a distant concept but a current phenomenon taking root on Base. "The agentic economy will be larger than the human economy. And it's happening on Base," he noted in a recent post.
Armstrong has long championed cryptocurrency as the only viable currency for machines. To support the growth of this new economy, he emphasized the need for a service discovery layer for AI agents. This led to Coinbase's introduction of the marketplace Agentic.market alongside the open payment protocol known as x402. The integration of this standard is gaining momentum, with significant corporate adoption already underway.

A notable advancement includes Amazon Web Services (AWS), which has automated its billing processes, allowing third-party AI agents to autonomously procure additional cloud capacity through microtransactions. Google Cloud and Solana have launched the Pay.sh marketplace, enabling AI agents, including Google's Gemini, to autonomously discover, test, and pay for APIs using stablecoins without the need for user registrations. This move reflects a broader trend where AI agents are gradually becoming self-sufficient participants in the digital economy.

Data from Artemis and various internal platforms reveal a significant volume of transactions taking place via the x402 protocol, which has processed over 169 million transactions, totaling approximately $50.34 million. This demonstrates not only the viability of AI-driven commerce but also the rapid adoption of the x402 standard across sectors.
Coinbase's dominance in this space is noteworthy, with its layer-2 network, Base, commanding an impressive 82.1% of the entire agent payment volume. The network currently supports around 250,000 active daily AI agents and has experienced a staggering 400% year-over-year growth in its infrastructure capabilities.
