In an evolving environment where artificial intelligence plays a central role, Expedia Group is rethinking its marketing strategy by focusing on AI agents. This shift marks a departure from traditional brand loyalty, as these agents evaluate options based on specific features instead of mere recognition.

As travel marketing adapts to the impact of AI, the concept of B2A, or business to agent, emerges. Expedia is developing a dedicated marketing function aimed specifically at these AI agents, moving away from a consumer-focused approach. The reasoning is clear: while human customers often depend on brand familiarity to make purchase decisions, AI agents function differently. They can analyze every available option, requiring a new way for businesses to engage.

Jochen Koedijk, Chief Marketing Officer at Expedia, emphasized this structural shift during a panel discussion at the recent Expedia Explore event in Las Vegas. He remarked, "Agents are becoming a new audience, in addition to businesses and consumers. This is not a transition from consumer to agent, but it's in parallel." This statement highlights the dual strategy the company is adopting, as it aims to address the needs of both human travelers and AI-driven agents.

Despite this strategic shift, the immediate effect on booking behavior remains limited. Currently, less than 1.5% of Expedia’s traffic is attributed to efforts in answer engine optimization (AEO), indicating that the market has not yet fully recognized the potential of AI agents in decision-making processes. This figure reflects the early stage of this approach, suggesting that it may take time for the broader travel industry to adapt to this new dynamic.

Expedia's focus on engaging AI agents signifies a notable trend in the travel sector, where marketing strategies are increasingly shaped by technological advancements. As AI agents continue to gain prominence, their ability to process large amounts of information will likely require a fundamental rethinking of how travel brands communicate their unique offerings. The competitive advantage will depend on an agent's ability to identify what makes a specific property, route, or package appealing, rather than simply relying on established brand names.

Looking forward, the travel industry will need to assess the effectiveness of this B2A strategy and its implications for marketing practices. As AI technology evolves, the potential for AI agents to influence consumer behavior could be significant, compelling brands to adapt further. Travel companies that embrace this change early may find themselves at the forefront of a new marketing era that prioritizes the capabilities of AI over traditional brand loyalty.
