At the recent Google I/O conference, Liz Reid, head of Search at Google, explained how users will be able to create and customize multiple AI agents tailored for various tasks directly within Search. For example, an agent could monitor stock market trends and provide alerts when significant changes occur. This functionality aims to simplify the user experience by automating data collection and notifications, fundamentally altering how individuals interact with information online.
Always-On AI
A standout feature of this new system is the introduction of "information agents" capable of gathering dynamic data proactively. Robby Stein, vice president of product for Search, noted that users could request updates on specific interests, such as sneaker releases from favorite athletes. The agent would continuously monitor relevant sources and deliver real-time notifications, even when the user is not actively engaged with the platform. This level of automation could change user expectations regarding information retrieval.
Additionally, Google plans to expand its booking agents, which were first introduced with the now-defunct Duplex feature. The new agents will assist in gathering information about local services, allowing users to receive price quotes or check availability without manual searches. This strategy keeps users within Google’s ecosystem, reducing the need for external browsing—an approach that has characterized Google's feature rollouts in the past.
Enhanced Customization and Interaction
The tech giant is also improving its coding tool, Antigravity, to generate customized outputs in Search. This upgraded version will facilitate the creation of interactive visualizations and tailored experiences, such as simulating astronomical phenomena. According to Stein, these innovations will enable Search to craft unique layouts and incorporate visual elements that enhance user understanding and engagement.

The introduction of AI Overviews and AI Mode has already begun automating the information-gathering process, but the new AI agents take this a step further by acting on behalf of users, reducing their role to mere initiators of inquiries.
