This week, the volume of agentic payments—autonomous transactions executed by AI agents—reached a three-month high. Data from Finbold reveals that 672,800 transactions were processed on the Base network on June 10, marking a sharp increase from previous months.

The x402 payment standard, developed by Coinbase and now overseen by the Linux Foundation, has experienced a 321% rise in activity over the past three months. This surge stands out compared to the 159,600 transactions recorded on March 13. Following a period of low activity, the trend began to change in early June, coinciding with the launch of Travala’s Travel MCP.

The Role of Travala in Agentic Payments

Travala's new booking protocol, launched in early June, enables AI agents to autonomously search for, reserve, and pay for hotel accommodations across 2.2 million properties. This functionality allows transactions in $USDC for bookings as low as $0.01. The introduction of these capabilities seems to have sparked the recent increase in agentic payments, indicating a shift toward more automated and efficient commerce.

Interestingly, average transaction sizes have also dropped, hitting a three-month low of around $0.11 on the x402 standard and $0.09 on the Machine Payments Protocol, developed by Stripe and Paradigm’s Tempo blockchain. This decline may suggest a growing trend of smaller, more frequent transactions, which could further promote the adoption of agentic commerce.

Implications of Growing Agentic Payment Activity

The significant rise in agentic payments reflects a broader trend of mainstream adoption of artificial intelligence technologies. A report from Chainalysis indicates that the demand for these automated transactions is evolving. Notably, transactions of $1 or more now represent 95% of the total value transferred, a sharp increase from just 49% in early 2025.

Looking ahead, the future of agentic payments appears bright. Predictions indicate that the volume of agentic commerce transactions could soar to $8 billion by 2026 and potentially reach $3.5 trillion by 2031, according to estimates from Travala. The recent surge in activity may signal a new phase for agentic payments, with x402 playing a key role in their expected mainstream adoption.

As AI integration across various sectors continues to progress, the implications for payment systems and commerce practices are significant. With the infrastructure for agentic payments becoming more reliable, the potential for widespread use looks increasingly promising, paving the way for a transformative era in AI-powered transaction processing.
