In a significant move for the audiobook industry, Spotify has announced a new AI-driven tool that enables authors to create and self-publish audiobooks on its platform. This feature, powered by ElevenLabs, will launch in beta this June on an invite-only basis, initially supporting the English language. This tool is part of Spotify’s ongoing expansion into the audiobook sector, which has experienced notable growth in recent years.
The audiobook creation tool enhances Spotify's offerings for authors. It allows creators to publish their audiobooks on other platforms without the limitations of an exclusive contract. This flexibility is likely to attract many authors seeking greater control over their distribution channels. Spotify’s collaboration with ElevenLabs builds on their existing partnership, which previously enabled the submission of AI-generated audiobooks from ElevenLabs' platform to Spotify.
Spotify's commitment to audiobooks is further demonstrated by its recent expansion of the "Spotify for Authors" platform, which will now support an additional ten languages, including French, German, and Latin American Spanish. This multilingual support aims to reach diverse global markets and cater to a wider audience. Additionally, Spotify has made progress with its Audiobook+ subscription service, which has already surpassed one million subscribers and is projected to generate $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
The company’s initiatives in the audiobook sector have shown results, with a reported 60% year-on-year increase in listening hours. More than half of its current audiobook listeners started engaging with the platform within the last year, highlighting a growing interest in this content format. Spotify has also built a catalog that now features 700,000 titles, emphasizing its aggressive drive to capture market share in the audiobook space.
At its recent Investor Day event, Spotify outlined further enhancements to its audiobook features. Users will soon be able to use natural language queries for audiobook discovery, simplifying navigation through the extensive library. The platform plans to introduce prompt-based playlists that will include audiobooks, music, and podcasts, further integrating audiobooks into the overall audio experience.
As Spotify continues to innovate and expand its audiobook offerings, the partnership with ElevenLabs positions it favorably in a competitive environment. The focus on flexible publishing and advanced AI capabilities could change how audiobooks are created and consumed. With the audiobook market expected to grow, Spotify's strategy may well lead the way in this evolution, serving both authors and listeners effectively.
