At the recent Google I/O event, the tech giant unveiled three significant updates to its Google Shopping platform, dramatically enhancing the AI shopping experience. Central to these updates is the introduction of the Universal Cart, which aggregates products from multiple retailers into one shopping experience. In addition to the Universal Cart, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which allows AI agents to handle purchases and reservations on behalf of users. This feature will soon roll out to users in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Current partnerships with e-commerce leaders like Shopify, Amazon, and Walmart enhance the UCP's capabilities, enabling AI agents to engage directly with retailers.

However, the expanded abilities of AI agents come with new parameters to prevent misuse. The Agent Payments Protocol 2 (AP2) introduces limits on how much an AI agent can spend and what it can purchase. This protocol ensures that users maintain control over transactions, providing a safeguard against potential errors. Additionally, AP2 creates a permanent record of transactions, which is particularly useful for returns or order discrepancies.
