A contract between Anthropic and SpaceX is expected to generate $1.25 billion monthly for the next six years, reflecting the growing demand for AI compute resources. Signed in May, this agreement enables Anthropic to use SpaceX's Colossus and Colossus 2 data centers, marking a notable shift in AI infrastructure.

Details of the Agreement

The contract, which runs through May 2029, could see Anthropic pay SpaceX over $40 billion if it remains in effect. Anthropic confirmed that the compute resources will mainly support inference tasks, essential for AI models to generate outputs and make conclusions effectively.

Initially, Anthropic will enjoy a discounted rate for May and June. However, both companies can terminate the agreement with a 90-day notice, providing flexibility should circumstances change.

Implications for SpaceX and AI Infrastructure

The revenue from Anthropic serves as a crucial support for SpaceX, especially as the company’s AI operations have faced rising costs. SpaceX's recent S-1 filing revealed AI-related losses exceeding $6 billion last year, driven by climbing expenses for cloud services and GPU depreciation. In the first quarter of this year, those losses more than doubled to nearly $2.5 billion.

To tackle these challenges, SpaceX is exploring the production of its own GPUs to lessen its dependence on external suppliers like Nvidia, which currently dominates the advanced GPU market. By manufacturing chips, SpaceX could boost its profitability and enter a market where it previously had no presence.

The Expanding AI Compute Market

The AI infrastructure market is estimated to be around $2.4 trillion, fueled by rising demand for AI compute capabilities. SpaceX's entry into this market, along with its existing partnership with Google Cloud, underscores the company's goal to diversify its revenue streams amid increasing operational costs.

As SpaceX plans to build more data centers, potentially even in space, the collaboration with Anthropic could lead to similar contracts in the future. This strategic move allows SpaceX to monetize unused compute capacity while maintaining the ability to redirect resources for internal projects when needed.

The deal with Anthropic not only strengthens SpaceX's foothold in the AI infrastructure sector but also highlights the intensifying competition among tech giants aiming for a slice of the rapidly growing AI compute market.
