In an era where cryptocurrency scams are proliferating, the introduction of AI agents is proving to be a powerful ally for investigators. According to Chainalysis' 2026 Crypto Crime Report, operations leveraging AI generate an alarming average of $3.2 million, significantly higher than the $719,000 average from traditional scams. As crypto crime evolves, so do the tools and tactics available to those fighting it.

The rise of sophisticated scams has prompted financial crime investigators to adopt AI technology. Agentic AI is now being used to assist investigators in communicating with fraudsters, offering insights into their methods and motivations. This technology also helps investigators analyze suspicious transactions, making it easier for less experienced personnel to navigate complex cases. As banks increasingly consider offering crypto trading services, the need for effective fraud detection measures is more urgent than ever.

Simone Maini, president of Elliptic, highlights the dual nature of AI in this environment. "Bad actors have always been the earliest adopters of any new technology, and AI is no different from that," she remarked. As criminals exploit vulnerabilities, investigators have a significant opportunity to use advanced techniques to counter these efforts. Maini compares the ongoing struggle against financial crime to a cat-and-mouse game, where both sides continuously adapt to new technologies.

The Financial Impact of AI-Driven Scams

The financial ramifications of AI-driven scams are stark. Chainalysis reports a staggering 1,400% increase in the use of automated impersonation tactics this year alone. This dramatic rise in revenue per scam highlights the urgency for financial institutions to enhance their fraud detection capabilities. As AI continues to lower entry barriers to cybercrime, the knowledge being gathered by investigators remains crucial in the ongoing battle against these threats.

Felix Shipkevich, a law professor and principal at Shipkevich PLLC, notes that banks are increasingly using AI to identify suspicious transaction patterns and link activities to known illicit actors. "AI is used by banks and financial institutions today to identify suspicious transaction patterns, wallet behavior, clustering, and links to known illicit actors faster than manual review alone," he explained. Despite AI's capabilities, human oversight is essential to ensure compliance and sound judgment.

How AI Agents Operate

Chainalysis has developed AI agents that simulate interactions with scammers to gather insights into their behaviors. By conducting mock conversations, these agents help investigators understand the strategies employed by criminals. Chainalysis has expanded its monitoring efforts to cover over 400 blockchain networks, tracking transactions and identifying connections among digital assets. This proactive approach enables the company to provide valuable intelligence to financial institutions, helping them prevent scams before they can take hold.

"We have collection strategies that look at scammers and their laundering of victim proceeds," explained Jonathan Levin, CEO of Chainalysis. These insights empower clients to make informed decisions regarding risk management and fraud prevention.

Similarly, Elliptic employs AI to streamline compliance operations. The firm monitors activities across over 65 blockchains, using advanced algorithms to differentiate between legitimate transactions and suspicious ones. Maini elaborated on the importance of context in compliance work, particularly for new team members. "When a new person looks at a case, they don’t have to be a subject matter expert. We can just provide them with that natural language explanation," she said. This approach accelerates decision-making and enhances the overall efficiency of compliance teams.

The Road Ahead for Financial Institutions

As AI technology continues to evolve, its role in both perpetrating and combating crypto crime will undoubtedly expand. Shipkevich stresses that while tools provided by Chainalysis and Elliptic are invaluable, banks cannot delegate their compliance responsibilities. "Regulators will still expect banks to maintain their own risk-based AML controls, monitoring, escalation and oversight," he cautioned. Financial institutions must treat cryptocurrency as a higher-risk product and ensure that their staff are well-trained in blockchain analytics.

The integration of AI in the fight against crypto crime presents both challenges and opportunities. While scammers exploit AI to enhance their operations, investigators are equipped with powerful tools to counteract these threats. The future will require continuous adaptation and vigilance as both sides navigate the complexities of this evolving battlefield.
