The Government of Lesotho has embarked on a consequential journey through a landmark Memorandum of Agreement with Convalt Energy, aimed at developing a $6.2 billion renewable energy and AI infrastructure initiative. This ambitious project will feature the Kobong Hydropower and AI Data Centre, which intends to harness over 1200MW of renewable hydropower capacity alongside a green-powered data centre.

This initiative is part of a broader partnership that envisions an additional 4.6GW of solar power generation, incorporating both ground-mounted and floating solar systems, as well as up to 4GWh of battery energy storage systems. The scale of investment marks the largest commitment in Lesotho's history, although it depends on comprehensive feasibility studies, financing arrangements, permitting, and regulatory approvals.

Lesotho's government positions this development as essential for enhancing energy independence and reducing reliance on imported electricity. Boitelo Rabele, a government spokesperson, highlighted the potential benefits for the nation, stating, “For many years, Basotho have spoken about the immense potential of our natural resources. Today, we are beginning to see practical steps towards converting that potential into opportunities that can benefit current and future generations.” The project is expected to create jobs, stimulate local businesses, and attract further investments, establishing Lesotho as a key player in the regional green energy and digital infrastructure sectors.

Convalt Energy’s CEO, Hari Achuthan, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing the company’s strategic shift towards integrated infrastructure solutions tailored for energy-intensive industries. He noted, “As our company expands its capabilities… we are thrilled to be partnering with our Lesotho partners to bring clean energy, jobs and economic development to their nation.” This collaboration marks a significant evolution in Convalt's operations, which are now focused on infrastructure development and advanced manufacturing, particularly in the solar sector.

The formation of a new entity, Convalt International, is anticipated to oversee the Lesotho project and other international assets. This entity will facilitate the use of products manufactured by Convalt’s US operations where feasible and will seek funding through a mix of equity investments, support from multilateral development finance institutions, and project financing.

As the feasibility studies and regulatory processes unfold, stakeholders will closely monitor the project’s progression. If executed successfully, this initiative could redefine the energy landscape in Lesotho and serve as a model for similar developments across the region. Establishing Lesotho as a hub for green energy and digital infrastructure could bolster local economies and contribute significantly to the global push for sustainable energy solutions.

With a timeline extending to 2028 for completion, the Kobong Hydropower and AI Data Centre Project stands as a testament to the growing intersection of renewable energy and digital technology, offering a promising glimpse into a future where nations use their natural resources for economic and technological advancement.
