N2N Services has officially introduced Helios, a new AI agent platform designed specifically for the higher education sector. This launch marks a significant transition for the company as it phases out its long-standing Illuminate platform, which has served educational institutions for over a decade.

Helios is the first platform of its kind that allows educational institutions to build, govern, and deploy their own AI agents directly on existing systems. Kiran Kodithala, Founder and CEO of N2N Services, stated that Helios retains all the key features that made Illuminate successful while enhancing functionality. "Helios keeps every promise Illuminate made — fast, secure, turnkey API publishing — and then takes the next step: every API becomes a governed, auditable step in an AI agent pipeline," he said.

The Helios platform includes an Integration Builder, which facilitates Slack-to-SIS integration, improving communication and operational efficiency within educational settings. The Helios Agent Dashboard offers institutions tools to monitor agent performance and maintain a detailed run history. This user-friendly interface is designed for both programmers and business users, ensuring a wider range of staff can engage with the technology.

The retirement of Illuminate signals a significant shift in N2N’s strategy as Helios takes over. Illuminate has played a crucial role in allowing institutions to publish APIs across various student information systems, including Banner, Colleague, and PeopleSoft. At its peak, the platform supported over 500 live APIs and processed more than 3 million transactions daily across 400 institutions. This legacy of reliability sets a high bar for Helios as it aims to further streamline data sharing within education.

Kodithala emphasized that the transition to Helios will prioritize customer convenience: "Transition happens on the customer's schedule — not ours. Helios becomes the default for every new institution starting now." This approach aims to ensure a smooth shift for existing users of Illuminate, allowing them to adapt to Helios without disruption.

As N2N Services embarks on this new chapter, the implications for the education sector are significant. Helios not only aims to maintain the high standards set by Illuminate but also to enhance institutions' capabilities in managing their data and AI initiatives. The platform’s focus on governance and auditability in AI projects could lead to a more structured and transparent use of artificial intelligence in educational contexts.

Looking ahead, Helios could redefine how institutions utilize technology in their operations. By enabling more entities to create custom AI solutions without the need for complex middleware, the platform positions itself as a vital tool for educational institutions striving to remain competitive in an increasingly tech-driven environment. The key will be whether Helios can deliver on its ambitious promises and foster a more connected and efficient educational framework.
