Getnet, the global payments platform under Santander, has launched a significant capability allowing merchants to accept payments initiated by artificial intelligence agents. This move is set to transform commerce by enabling transactions between AI systems and payment infrastructures.
The new system can handle payments from both merchants' proprietary AI agents and those using conversational platforms. Getnet has stated that this solution is built on open standards, ensuring it is interoperable, secure, and protocol-agnostic. Initially, this advancement will serve businesses that already use their AI agents, with plans to extend access to smaller enterprises that may not have the resources to develop their own AI frameworks.
Juan Franco, CEO of Getnet, shared the vision behind this initiative: “Our goal is to provide the infrastructure that enables merchants, platforms and AI agents to operate securely, interoperably and at scale, making it easier to adopt new AI-powered shopping experiences.” This strategy not only streamlines the payment process but also seeks to create an environment where AI agents can facilitate transactions effectively.
In a strategic collaboration, Getnet has already established compatibility with Mastercard's Agent Pay, with an integration with Visa's Intelligent Commerce on the way. Pablo Fourez, Chief Digital Officer at Mastercard, emphasized the importance of security in this new landscape, stating, “As AI agents take on a more active role in commerce, trust becomes the foundation of every transaction.” The partnership with Mastercard is particularly significant as it works toward ensuring that agent-initiated payments are secure and authenticated, enhancing trust in this innovative commerce model.
Earlier this year, Mastercard and Santander reached a key milestone by conducting Europe’s first live end-to-end payment using an AI agent within a regulated banking framework. This transaction, carried out in a controlled environment, utilized Mastercard Agent Pay and marked a significant advancement in the practical use of AI systems for initiating and completing customer transactions.
At the same time, Visa and Santander have begun a partnership focused on advancing agentic commerce in Latin America, successfully completing a series of pilot transactions powered by Visa Intelligent Commerce. These developments highlight the swift evolution of AI's role in payment systems and the growing agreement among major financial players on the need to integrate AI capabilities into everyday commerce.
