In a notable twist, Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, its latest AI model, just days after a service disruption raised concerns about the reliability of its infrastructure. This new model, a public version of the previously restricted Mythos, aims to enhance capabilities in software engineering, knowledge work, and vision tasks.

The backdrop to this rollout is significant. Over the weekend, a temporary infrastructure failure affected Anthropic’s Opus 4.7 and 4.8 models, leading to a complete halt of Anthropic's services on the productivity platform Notion. Max Schoening, Notion's head of product, clarified that the outage stemmed from routine infrastructure issues and did not reflect problems with model quality. Anthropic’s spokesperson echoed this, describing the incident as a brief setback that caused elevated error rates across multiple Claude models before being resolved.

Despite these challenges, the introduction of Claude Fable 5 marks a key moment in Anthropic's commercial strategy. The model is accessible via the Claude API and features consumption-based Enterprise plans priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens—twice the cost of its predecessor, Opus 4.8. This pricing strategy underscores the stable capabilities that Fable 5 promises.

Initial independent evaluations of Fable 5 have been overwhelmingly positive. Ethan Mollick, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, reported that Fable outperformed all other public models he tested by a significant margin. He noted its ability to handle complex multi-page specifications over extended periods and even generate fully playable video games from a single prompt using Claude Code. In another encouraging sign for Anthropic, analytics firm Hex observed that Fable was the first model to achieve a 90 percent score on its benchmark for complex analytical tasks.

Additionally, Anthropic has indicated that the majority of Fable's sessions—at least 95 percent—are self-sufficient, relying entirely on the model’s responses. The fallback to the Opus 4.8 model is reserved for high-stakes queries, particularly in sensitive domains like cybersecurity and biology.

As the market absorbs these developments, the launch of a new model alongside infrastructure challenges serves as a critical test of user confidence in Anthropic’s offerings. The implications for the broader AI sector are profound, especially as enterprises increasingly rely on advanced models for productivity and decision-making. The ability of Fable 5 to deliver on its promises will be closely monitored, particularly in light of the recent service disruptions. As companies evaluate their options in the AI space, Anthropic's next steps will be crucial in shaping its position in this competitive market.
