Meta has initiated a substantial investment in India's AI infrastructure by collaborating with Reliance Industries to construct a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled with desalinated seawater, and it is expected to be operational within the next two years.

The data center marks a significant expansion of Meta's capabilities to meet its global AI computing needs. This partnership builds on a previously established relationship, which began with Meta's $5.7 billion investment in Reliance's Jio Platforms in 2020. Last year, the two companies launched a joint venture worth $100 million aimed at developing enterprise AI solutions for the Indian market and international clients.

Meta's venture aligns with a growing trend among major tech players. Companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and OpenAI have also made substantial commitments to enhance AI infrastructure in India. The country's data center capacity is projected to increase from 1.5 gigawatts to over 8 gigawatts by 2030. This surge in investment highlights the urgent demand for advanced computing resources in the region.

In addition to the data center, Meta has secured nearly one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity in India through partnerships with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. While the financial details of the data center project remain undisclosed, its strategic importance positions Meta to play a vital role in India's evolving tech landscape.

As demand for AI capabilities escalates, Meta's investment reinforces its commitment to sustainability through renewable energy. It also underscores the importance of local partnerships in scaling AI infrastructure. With rapid growth expected in India's data center market, Meta's collaboration with Reliance sets a benchmark for future investments in this critical area, ensuring both companies stay competitive in the global AI arena.
