The unveiling of 'Tianyan', an intelligent research agent by the China Economic Information Service (CEIS), marks a significant advancement in the application of AI for industrial analysis. Designed to assist in studying emerging industries during China's upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan period, which spans from 2026 to 2030, Tianyan promises to deliver automated support for decision-making across various sectors.

This platform is a key part of CEIS's 'AI + think tank' initiative, which seeks to merge advanced AI capabilities with traditional research methods. Zhang Chunfang, product manager at CEIS's Digital Economy Research Center, noted that the agent focuses on three main functionalities. First, it can automatically map enterprises across complex industrial chains by using a proprietary algorithm to identify connections, allowing it to monitor over 17,873 key enterprises across six strategic sectors, including quantum technology and biomanufacturing.

Second, Tianyan features a unique knowledge engine tailored for evaluating future industries. The development team ensures the system is regularly updated with firsthand data from frontline research and field studies. Consequently, every assessment generated by Tianyan is evidence-based and traceable, bolstering the credibility of its insights. This is essential for stakeholders who need reliable data for strategic decision-making.

The third core capability of Tianyan is its autonomous industrial assessment engine. Instead of depending on manual data searches, it employs modular expert capabilities, integrating industrial-chain analysis, policy interpretation, and enterprise profiling to automate complex evaluations. This innovation significantly reduces the time and effort typically needed for thorough industrial assessments.

Cao Jie, deputy general manager of the Economic Think Tank at CEIS, explained that Tianyan will primarily address two use cases. For government agencies, it can produce detailed industrial profiles and regional comparisons to support policymaking. For investors, the system can uncover emerging opportunities by assessing promising small-scale and hard-tech enterprises through a specialized evaluation model.

CEIS’s president, Cao Wenzhong, highlighted the organization's dedication to advancing intelligent agents in high-value areas such as industrial assessments, policy analysis, and risk alerts. He indicated that the agency plans to establish a collaborative network of these agents, which will enhance think tank services and support national strategies and industrial innovation. This initiative aims to create a flagship national economic information platform that can adapt and evolve with China's economic landscape.

The introduction of Tianyan not only reflects a growing trend of integrating AI into industrial analysis but also underscores China's commitment to digital government operations and informed policymaking. As the country approaches its ambitious Five-Year Plan, tools like Tianyan are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of industrial development and investment strategies.
