In a major advancement for digital search, Google has announced a complete overhaul of its search product, setting the stage for a future where AI agents and generative user interfaces reshape how users interact with information. This transformation, described by the company as the most significant change to its search engine in over 25 years, was revealed during the annual Google I/O conference.
At the heart of this redesign is a new search interface that supports longer, conversational queries. The updated search box features an AI-powered suggestion system that goes beyond traditional autocomplete. Users can now conduct more complex searches through Google’s AI Overviews, which enable follow-up questions via a newly developed AI Mode.
Starting this summer, Google will introduce “information agents” that will run continuously in the background. These agents can track internet changes and deliver synthesized updates to users. Liz Reid, head of Search at Google, provided a practical example of this functionality, showing how users could set up an agent to monitor market fluctuations in a specific sector. The agent would create a customized monitoring plan, access necessary data sources—including real-time financial information—and notify users when certain conditions are met, complete with links to relevant resources. This feature builds on the framework established by Google Alerts, introduced in 2003.
Another important feature of the overhaul is the launch of what Google calls “generative UI.” This innovative capability allows Search to create custom widgets and interactive visuals in real-time based on user queries. Developed in partnership with Google DeepMind, the generative UI runs on the Gemini Flash 3.5 framework, enhancing the user experience.
Users will also be able to create customizable “mini apps” directly within the Search platform using natural-language commands. Examples include meal-planning tools that sync with calendars and personalized fitness applications. This functionality is powered by Google Antigravity, the company’s agentic development platform.
The reach of Google AI Overviews has already expanded to more than 2.5 billion monthly users, while the conversational AI Mode has exceeded 1 billion monthly users. In comparison, ChatGPT reported 900 million weekly active users earlier this year. This rapid adoption indicates a growing demand for AI-enhanced search capabilities.
The newly designed search box is available now, while the generative UI feature is expected to launch this summer at no extra cost to users. The information agents and mini app functionalities will first be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, with plans for wider access in the future.
Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, underscored the significance of efficient and cost-effective frontier models in expanding access to these innovations. He stated, "Part of the reason we focus on delivering frontier models is because we want to bring it to as many people as possible."
