Meta Platforms is set to lease an artificial intelligence-enabled data center in India, boasting a significant capacity of 168 megawatts. Located in Jamnagar, this facility will be developed by Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, with completion expected within two years. This investment is part of Meta's strategy to enhance its AI infrastructure globally while also strengthening its economic ties with India.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta, emphasized the significance of the facility, stating, "This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India's economy." This commitment builds on a partnership that began in 2020 when Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, Ambani's telecom and digital services arm.

The collaboration between Meta and Reliance has evolved, with both companies working on a joint venture that makes Meta's open-source AI models accessible to Indian enterprises and developers. Ambani described this latest venture as a "consequential moment for India's digital infrastructure," highlighting its potential to reshape digital services in the country.

This move aligns with a growing trend among global hyperscalers investing heavily in India's data center market. Recent reports indicate that around $400 billion has flowed into India's AI ecosystem over the past year, primarily for developing data centers and the necessary energy infrastructure. According to Nomura, India's data center industry is rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing markets worldwide. The country is expected to expand its data center capacity to 7 gigawatts by 2030, benefiting from cost-efficient operations compared to other developed markets in Asia Pacific and the West.

A key factor in this expansion is the Indian government's recent initiative to provide a 20-year tax exemption for hyperscalers operating data centers in the country. This policy aims to attract foreign investment and boost the local economy.

Alongside its data center investment, Meta is also prioritizing sustainability. The company is partnering with local clean energy firms CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy to procure nearly 1 gigawatt of renewable energy. These initiatives will supply clean energy to support Meta's expanding infrastructure across various Indian states. The company aims to align all its operations with a commitment to 100% clean and renewable energy, reinforcing its global sustainability goals.
