As global tech companies scramble to enhance their AI capabilities, Meta has taken a decisive step by partnering with India's Reliance Industries to establish a substantial AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This collaboration, announced on Wednesday, involves a 168-megawatt facility designed to strengthen Meta's AI infrastructure and support its expanding global operations.

This agreement marks Meta's first major investment in Indian AI infrastructure and builds on a relationship that has developed since the tech giant's $5.7 billion investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms in 2020. The partnership previously resulted in a $100 million joint venture aimed at creating enterprise AI solutions for both the local market and international clients.

India’s rise as a central hub for AI infrastructure is highlighted by its rapid growth in data center capacity. The country has seen its installed data center capacity grow from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to an expected 1.5 gigawatts by 2025. Industry forecasts suggest this figure could soar beyond 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, fueled by increasing demand for cloud services and AI workloads. Consequently, investments from major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have intensified, further establishing India as an appealing market for data center investments.

Meta's venture coincides with government initiatives aimed at attracting foreign investments in cloud computing. These initiatives include tax exemptions for foreign cloud service providers on international sales until 2047, provided the services are operated from Indian data centers. This policy framework encourages companies to establish a presence in the region amid rising demands for computational power to train AI models.

The new facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy and will use desalinated seawater for cooling, aligning with global sustainability trends. Reliance will provide a range of services, from design and construction to renewable power and connectivity solutions, positioning the company as a potential leader in AI infrastructure support for tech firms looking to establish or expand their footprint in India.

The anticipated completion of the Jamnagar facility in two years represents an important milestone in this partnership. As Meta prepares to lease capacity at the site, it will be integrated into the company’s global network, enhancing its ability to meet growing AI computing requirements.

The collaboration with Reliance not only boosts Meta’s infrastructure capabilities but also reflects a broader trend of international tech firms recognizing India’s potential as a key player in the global AI arena. As local demand for data processing and AI applications continues to rise, the significance of such investments is clear. The Meta-Reliance agreement represents a strategic alignment that could transform the future of AI infrastructure in India and beyond.
