As the demand for advanced computing power surges, Meta has partnered with Reliance Industries to establish a significant AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This facility, with a capacity of 168 megawatts, highlights India's rise as a central hub for AI infrastructure as global tech companies seek to expand their operations in the region.

The partnership, announced on Wednesday, builds on the already deepening relationship between the two companies. Meta's previous multibillion-dollar investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms laid the groundwork for this collaboration, which now includes a $100 million joint venture initiated last year focused on developing enterprise AI solutions for both local and international markets. The Jamnagar data center will play a key role in supporting Meta’s expanding AI operations globally.

India's growing status as a destination for AI infrastructure investment is becoming increasingly clear. Major players like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have ramped up their commitments to the country, recognizing its potential for growth. The Indian government has also been proactive, introducing policy incentives such as tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers until 2047, encouraging the establishment of data centers on Indian soil. This has resulted in a notable increase in the country’s data center capacity, which has grown from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to an expected 1.5 gigawatts by 2025, with projections suggesting it could exceed 8 gigawatts by 2030.

The collaboration with Reliance will allow Meta to lease capacity at the new Jamnagar facility, which is set to be completed within two years. The data center will operate on renewable energy sources and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. Reliance will manage the entire process, from design and construction to ongoing operations, positioning itself as a comprehensive provider of AI infrastructure services for international tech firms.

This agreement not only strengthens Meta's existing infrastructure but also integrates India more closely into its global AI network. The collaboration is indicative of a broader trend as companies like Blackstone-backed AirTrunk announce significant investments—$30 billion to develop 5 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2030—further solidifying the environment for AI infrastructure in India.

The Meta-Reliance partnership marks a significant moment in the evolution of AI infrastructure, reinforcing the idea that India is not just a backdrop but an active participant in the AI revolution. As the field of AI continues to evolve, the strategic decisions made today will shape the future of tech investments in India and beyond.
