Nvidia's ambitious plan to establish a gigawatt-scale AI cloud infrastructure in South Korea is reshaping the country's technology sector. Through strategic alliances with SK Telecom and SK Hynix, Nvidia seeks to accelerate the development of next-generation memory chips and AI services. The collaboration with SK Telecom will enable the launch of the first gigawatt-scale AI cloud services in the region. By integrating Nvidia's advanced GPUs with SK Telecom's extensive data centers and networks, both companies plan to create AI factories that generate essential data tokens for artificial intelligence applications. The first of these facilities is expected to begin operations in 2027, marking a pivotal moment in the region's technological advancement.
Nvidia's partnership with SK Hynix further cements its presence in the fast-evolving AI sector. This multi-year agreement will focus on innovating next-generation memory chips and optimizing semiconductor production, which is critical for Nvidia's GPU accelerators. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO, confirmed that the upcoming Vera CPUs will include memory technology from SK Hynix, underscoring the depth of this collaboration.
In addition to these partnerships, Naver, a leader in cloud computing and internet services in South Korea, is also joining forces with Nvidia. Together, they are developing AI factories and strategizing to expand into the Asia-Pacific, European, and Middle Eastern markets. Naver’s commitment to “sovereign AI,” through its proprietary large language model, aligns with national efforts to enhance AI capabilities and independence.
This drive towards AI innovation aligns with the objectives set by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who took office in June 2025. His administration is actively pursuing AI autonomy to position South Korea as a global leader in technology. The government and local enterprises have made substantial investments, acquiring 260,000 advanced Nvidia GPUs to support this transition.
To ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives, President Lee appointed Han Seong-sook, former CEO of Naver, as prime minister. Her role involves overseeing the country’s AI-driven growth and ensuring that South Korea meets its ambitious technological goals.
