Sanofi has taken a major step to enhance its drug development capabilities by entering into a multi-year collaboration with Owkin, a France-based AI company. This partnership underscores a commitment to integrating advanced AI technologies into biopharma workflows, aiming to transform how drugs are discovered and developed.
The agreement includes a five-year licensing of Owkin’s K Pro platform, designed to improve various aspects of drug discovery and development. This collaboration builds on a previous €90 million ($103.6 million) partnership established in 2021, which focused on oncology target identification and patient subgrouping. Over time, the collaboration has broadened to include applications within Sanofi’s immunology pipeline, representing a significant evolution in their efforts to effectively use AI in biopharma.
Owkin will develop new AI tools tailored specifically for Sanofi’s operational needs. These intelligent digital assistants are designed to autonomously manage complex tasks within drug research and development. By deploying these agents through the K Pro platform, Sanofi aims to strengthen its existing AI infrastructure, creating a more integrated approach to drug development.
K Pro utilizes multimodal patient datasets alongside specialized biological AI systems to support pharmaceutical workflows from the early stages of discovery to clinical development. The goal is to enhance competitive intelligence, allowing for faster and more informed decision-making while improving accuracy across the industry value chain.
Thomas Clozel, CEO and co-founder of Owkin, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “Building on our collaboration with Sanofi, this marks a shift toward truly embedded AI.” The adoption of purpose-built AI systems is expected to empower Sanofi’s teams, enabling them to work with greater speed, depth, and confidence in their pursuit of impactful healthcare outcomes.
As the biopharma sector increasingly turns to AI to streamline drug development, partnerships like the one between Sanofi and Owkin could set a new standard. By incorporating advanced AI systems into their workflows, Sanofi could unlock the full potential of its data, ultimately accelerating decision-making and improving patient outcomes. This collaboration not only reflects a growing trend in the industry but also positions Sanofi as a leader in integrating AI technologies within pharmaceutical development.
